Maurice Prendergast, Attributed: Untitled (Women with - Maurice Prendergast (American, 1858-1924) Attributed: Untitled (Women with Parasols #6). Watercolor and pencil on illustration board, signed lower right. Framed by Charles Prendergast. Markings verso are consistent with other known works by the artist. Maurice Brazil Prendergast was active in Massachusetts, New York, and France. He is known for modernist genre-crowds, landscape, and still life painting 9 3/8 ” x 13 3/4” image, 14 1/8” x 19 3/8” frame Private collector. Reported as a gift to the current owner's mother from Eugenie Prendergast, her friend, circa 1965. Eugenie Prendergast (1894–1994), Charles Prendergast's widow, was an active guardian of the work and reputations of Maurice and Charles after her husband’s death in 1948. Her friendship with the former owner is documented in family photos and correspondence. Since Nancy Mowll Mathews left the Prendergast Archives and Study center at Williams College in 2010, there has been no established authority authenticating works by the artists. As the task of furthering Prendergast's catalog raisonne had been disbanded one can only strongly attribute this painting (or any other work by Prendergast that was not submitted to the catalog before 2010) as a work of Prendergast given the substantial evidence accompanying it.
