Signed lower left, undated, framed. Possibly form an important group of paintings executed by Vincent van Gogh between 1887 and early 1890. While at Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France, where Van Gogh admitted himself, he did more than 30 copies of works by some of his favorite artists. About twenty-one of the works were copies after, or inspired by, Jean-François Millet. He wrote to his brother Theo, ”As it were; to me Millet, is that essential modern painter who opened the horizon to many.” Vincent van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. This item shows no apparent damage to the painting, but the edges of the paper are extremely ragged. There is a thin layer of grime that is most apparent in the upper right section.
