19TH C JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT BY KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI
Katsushika Hokusai, Japanese, 1760 to 1849, antique Edo period ukiyo e color woodblock print on Kozo paper, manga related to Heike Monogatari. Shunkan is left alone on Kikaigashima, a penal colony. Shunkan, who was drawn by Katsushika Hokusai in the ten volumes of Hokusai Manga, has an expression of realization, as if he has already moved past sadness. Circa: early 19th century. Inscribed with Calligraphy in the print, to the center left and upper right. Matted. Katsushika Hokusai, known simply as Hokusai, was a Japanese ukiyo e artist of the Edo period, active as a painter and printmaker. He is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai was instrumental in developing ukiyo e from a style of portraiture largely focused on courtesans and actors into a much broader style of art that focused on landscapes, plants, and animals. Antique Asian and Oriental Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.
